Chatting with the locals at Kampong Sadir in 1966
Typical routine was to plan to visit three or four border kampongs, being choppered in to the first, trekking to the rest, and then choppered out at the last about 4-5 days later. So as not to impose too much on the goodwill of the locals, who were relatively poor, I normally carried Gurkha rations and other necessities in a Bergen, which together with an Armalite and ammunition, meant quite a heavy load at the start of the patrol.
